Bob Warden Memorial Match on K&A Canal

The Bob Warden memorial match was fished on the Kennet and Avon canal at the George and Claverton. It was run in aid of Multiple Sclerosis and raised over £400 for the charity.

20 anglers fished and being a bright warm day, it meant there were lots of boats putting colour into the water and many walkers and cyclists around. Despite this, the canal has fished extremely well with an average weight of over 9 lbs per angler.

Bob’s son Leighton Warden was delighted to add his name to the trophy by winning the match. He was on the end peg at the George by the school.
He fished bread down the middle and caught skimmers and bream up to 3 lbs. He tried other baits but caught nothing on them so kept coming back to the bread to catch more skimmers and bream and finished with a weight of 19 lbs 12 ozs.

2nd was Andy Britt who was on the brambles at the George. In an area not usually known for skimmers, he was surprised to catch skimmers and bream to 3 lbs on the bread at 5 metres along with some roach. Once this line died, he was able to catch more skimmers and bream further across the canal, again on bread. He weighed 19 lbs 8 ozs.

3rd was Bob’s other son, Lee Warden with 16 lbs 2 ozs. He was drawn at Claverton a few pegs down from the bay. He started on bread and caught only 12 roach and then switched to his chop worms lines to catch a roach of 1 lbs 6 ozs, an eel of over 1 lb and a few small skimmers. Feeding squatts on the far side he caught lots of roach and bleak. The last hour he caught bleak on the inside while feeding squatts.

1: Leighton Warden (Crown)- 19 lbs 12 ozs
2: Andy Britt (Mosella Bathampton) - 19 lbs 8 ozs
3: Lee Warden (Mosella Bathampton) - 16 lbs 2 ozs
4: Nick Coles (Mosella Bathampton) - 14 lbs 15 ozs
5: Nick Lewis (Crown) - 12 lbs 6 ozs
6: Kev Boltz (Midland Spinner) - 11 lbs 12 ozs

Saturday 11/09/2021 – Bathampton AA – Dave Crookes Memorial Charity Match – Bridge Pool

Because Dave Crookes was a long time good friend I have wanted to fish this match for some time but for various reason couldn’t. Dave and I joined the BAA committee at the same time through the affiliated clubs. Dave representing the RAF and me MST. Dave was a natural angler but didn’t regularly fish matches, when he did he often framed. I would love to win this one in his memory.

Because there were two matches today, ours on Bridge Pool and a 24 hours Carp match on the Main Lake I arrived to a packed car park . I had a walk around the Pool with Dave Gillard. Apparently some heavy rain last week had knocked the colour out, so expectation was for it to fish hard.

Back to the draw and it was a nice touch by the BAA committee to lay on bacon and sausage rolls and hot drinks – all FOC – well done to them. Cant beat the smell of bacon especially cooked out doors. Pools paid – raffle tickets purchased – no more on this one. The draw put me on peg 19, the peg I had last match here and got frustrated because I couldn’t see the float due to the sun shining on silver flotsam. For company I had matey Kev Winstone on peg 18 who would be difficult to beat especially if he listened to my advice!

Any peg on this Pool with cover hold F1’s. I have noticed that BAA have trimmed some of the islands which is OK but please leave the margins overgrown, otherwise we won’t be able to catch the F1’s in any numbers. Won’t catch these fish on a mud bank. As can be seen from the picture above peg 19 had plenty of margin cover and therefore holds plenty of F1’s – the problem is encouraging them out from the reeds to feed.

Two paste rigs – one for out in front and one for both margins just in front the reeds in 31/2 foot of water at top set plus three barrels of margin pole. Also the Ronnie rig in case I couldn’t see the down the margin. Started out in front with the paste over a pot of micro and as expected the same as previous match plenty of nibblers. So quickly abandoned after feeding some DR’s in GB for the Silvers as back up. Went down the RH margin which felt as if it wouldn’t produce. So round to the left with paste over micro and kindered hard 4’s and could just about see the float and had a couple of F1’s before the sun squeezed through the trees and hindered my vision. So thought I would try the Silvers with singe LR over the GB and loose fed LR’s. I fished this for an hour which accounted for 8 lb of Silvers. I felt I had a chance to frame in the Silvers, but wanted to go for the win. So back in the margin but the sun was a pain, so set up the waggler to fish further down to the end bank where visibility was far better. With double LR over loose fed LR’s I had two quick big F1’s before I was pestered by small Perch. Luckily the sun had moved on and I could go back to the margin paste rig. This resulted in spells of catching F1’s catch two and the shoal backed off. Late on I caught two small Carp and two better ones, the largest coming just before the whistle. Kev had caught a very similar amount of fish as me so it was going to be tight.

My silvers weighed 8 lb 2 oz, The four carp 30 lb and the F1’s 24 lb 12 oz for a match winner weight of 62 lb 14 oz beating Kev in to second spot by just 3 lb 2 oz which was the difference between our Silvers weights!

I usually give my trophies to the junior for recycling, however for sentimental reason I will be keeping this one in the office.

The Silvers was won by Paul Barnfield with a low weight of 14 lb 4 oz from peg 14. Paul Caught at 13 metres using his worm hook bait over chopped worm and copious amounts of micro. Well done matey.

Back to the pub with the usual suspects and a nice end to another memorable day mainly thanks to Arron Britnell, James Buckle and the rest of the BAA committee.

Thursday 22/10/2020 - Bathampton AA - Over 55's and Short Walks - Bridge Pool

Had my usual walk around a flat calm Bridge Pool which which has been windless for some time which lead to think it wise to switch on the aeration. The water had once again gone clear. There seemed to be plenty of small Ronnie's topping on the bottom pegs which might be a way to pick up today especially  if they are the only fish to feed. The trees and shrubs are starting to show their autumn glory - pictured. However, without any sunshine it was to feel a bit nipply.A good turn out with 24 fishing. Dave picked my peg 25. This peg under Colin Golding leadership was one of regulars to go in and did produce some good Carp weight from the margins, but subsequently got left out because it was back in a bay and possibly affected peg 26 which nowadays is left out. For company I had Paul Barnfield on peg 24 and Tony Rixon on peg 27, so I knew I would be outgunned on the pole, so set up the waggler.

Whilst shotting up the waggler I cast out and once the waggler reached 12-o-clock a Seagull flew from behind me and into my line and as bad luck would have it the hook half hitched around it's leg and with some help from Tony (only after he videoed it) and Paul Clayton managed to land it and unhitch it. Luckily it flew off uninjured. If I was a seafarer I would consider this an unlucky omen!

With the water so clear I didn't think the Carp would come in to the margin, but still set up a 4x12 Speedy set to 3 1/2 foot to fish worm or a bunch of maggots. As per usual I set up the Ronnie rig and a 4 x16 Winter Titan to fish top-set plus three barrels which took me to full depth and level with Paul's platform!

I fed the margin with a pot of Micro, the Ronnie line with GB laced with caster and the longer line with two balls of GB laced with caster. I also pulted some LR's to the middle of the bowl.

I have a quick look on the Ronnie line with single caster which produced nothing, so out on the long line and missed a bite then foul hooked a Carp which was soon lost. After this I had a few micro Ronnie's, Skimmers and Perch whilst Paul Was bagging on decent Skimmers fishing 13 metres using worm over micro and chopped worm. I refed the line and re-tried the Ronnie rig and had a few Ronnie's but was getting plenty of shy touches which I knew was due to the diameter of the line being a bit heavy but I was reluctant to change incase I hooked a Carp. The two GB lines produced very little so spent the most of the match on the waggler catching the odd Skimmer to 12 oz and Ronnie's to 3 oz on singe LR. I kept trying the margin with either maggot of worm and did have two 12 oz Perch, with 30 minutes to go had a liner followed by the float going under and foul hooked a decent Carp which again was soon lost, stayed in the margin to the end and had one more liner which didn't develop.

No Carp, with my Silvers weighing 8 lb 6 oz which amazingly got me last in the Silvers payout by default, thanks to the waggler I think.

The match and the Silvers was won by Tony Rixon (pictured below with his both his net of Silvers and Carp) with 47 lb 13 oz from peg 27 which is the peg he practiced on a few days before! See his blog for further details.

Paul Barnfield was second in the Silvers just behind Tony with 18 lb 8 oz, but did lose a top-set which a small F1 pulled out due to loose fitting section.

Back to the Compton with the usual suspects and still managed to self isolate in the garden.

Thursday 8/10/20 – Bathampton AA – Over 55’s and Short Walks

Thursday 08/10/2020 – Bathampton AA – Over 55’s and Short Walks – Bridge Pool

Due to dead tree felling on the Bridge the usual car park was closed so we parked at the far end. I was hoping this to be an omen for me to draw away from the high and low numbers. Bridge Pool was full due to the recent non-stop rain (pictured right). Due to this I was expecting it to fish poor, but it was to fish better than I thought.

Good turn out of 21 considering an expected morning full of rain. Due to the tree work we had to leave out pegs 18 and 17, this would make peg 19 a good choice.
Dave Gillard called me peg 15 happy with this, I must start parking this end every match! For company I had Whitebaiter Dave Haines on peg 14 and Hughie Evans on peg 16. I love fishing the waggler on pegs where the F1’s live, however, the wind was weird swirling all over the place, but was promised that the wind would subside so set up the waggler. The water looked clear so set up a deep 4 foot margin rig for paste or worm, lastly I set up a 4×18 jolly with a triple bulk to fish top-set plus three for Skimmers.

I started by feeding both margins with micro and the Skimmer line with micro and LR’s and fed a pouch on the waggler line. Started on the Skimmers with double LR’s on the hook and caught a few small Skimmers and an F1 probably before anyone had a bite. By time others started catching the peg died except for tiny Perch. Wasn’t disappointed as I was eager to pick the waggler up, which I did. I was soon catching some decent Ronnie’s and the odd F1, but the wind was murdering accuracy of the loose feed so had to cast where I fed. When I got a decent grouped feed I caught an F1 or a small Carp. The waggler died for the Ronnie’s so knew the Carp were about, so shallowed up and had an indifferent hour landing two decent Carp and losing two round the island and two at the net with the hook pulling due to the force needed to stop them going around the island – bugger. During this spell I foul hooked a decent Skimmer in the dorsal fin. I carried on catching Ronnie’s and the odd F1 until I had a Bramblegate, losing the lot – lose a waggler every time I fish these pegs! So had a quick look in the margin with paste with no indications I reset-up the waggler and carried on with that until an hour to go and went in the margin with worm over micro and had two more decent Carp losing a couple of fouler’s. It wasn’t until the last 15 minutes that the wind fell flat calm and was tempted to pick up the waggler, but glad I didn’t as, just before the all out hooked and landed another decent Carp.

My Silvers weighed 10 lb 14 oz and my Carp 37 lb 9 oz for a match winning total of 48 lb 7 oz.

The Silvers was won by my Apprentice Kev Winstone (pictured right with the match winner) with 29 lb 4 oz from peg 21. Kev caught short using caster over caster. Well done matey. His catch below less his three spikes – Lol:

It was back to the Compton for the usual suspects.

Thursday 10/09/2020 - Bathampton AA - Over 55's and Short Walks

Had my usual walk around the Pool, joined by Kev Winstone. It was clear to me it was going to fish hard, especially the far end pegs 30 to 34 and 1 to 5 absolutely no signs of fish. Unfortunately, my predictions were to proved true.

Hoping to avoid the pegs mentioned above, but NO, Dave Gillard pulled me peg 33. Not happy with this one, but happy to be out fishing. Another downside to these pegs you are in the shade all day and today I would be sitting opposite anglers with tea shirts and I would be in my fleece still feeling chilly. I think the fishing Gods are averaging out my catches.

I set up the usual - Paste float for the margin and one for top-set plus one out in front, Ronnie rig and a 4x16 to fish top-set plus three barrels. As it would be a question of scratching around for fish I thought about setting up a waggler, but foolishly couldn't be bothered. A lot more rigs that usual and expected to use them all.

So started on the long paste float hoping to catch a couple of decent Skimmers, but ended up catching small ones to 6 oz with very small pieces if paste. I did have one a pound. Then switched to the long lone line with the 4x16 with a 4 mm expander over micro and had a couple of Ronnie's so switched the line to chopped worm and caster before starting on the Ronnie rig with caster. This proved more productive catching a 2 lb Skimmer, some decent Ronnie's and Perch. I did pull put out a decent Perch I estimated to be near 2 lb fiddling trying to find my landing net. The line died indicating some bigger fish present to dropped the paste in and had four F1's before the line completely died. So last hope was the worm line which was poor, accounting for some small Perch and one Roach/Bream Hybrid of about 1 1/2 lb. About halfway through I went for a walk to warm up as much as anything. The Pool was fishing really hard. Went back and spent nearly three hours staring at the float hoping to catch fish that weren't in the peg. This is the point of the match where the waggler would have come into play! I had noticed a Carp swimming around on the surface for some time. However, last effort I shallowed up the Ronnie rig and added another section and with single caster on the hook feeding 6 casters a time hoping to catch some more better Ronnie's. I had a definite liner from a decent fish, so switched to paste and first dob in caught and landed a 10 lb Carp. Whilst playing it I notice another swirl over the caster feed, so couldn't waiting to get the paste back in and hey presto another positive bite, so I thought, anyway I missed it right on the whistle - bugger.

My Silvers weighed 11 lb 9 oz for one out of a Silvers pick up by default and my Carp net weighed 15 lb 12 oz for a total of 27 lb 5 oz for again just two out of an overall pick up. Fine margins one more Carp or one more Ronnie, either would have done for me.The match was won by Tony Rixon (pictured right with the Silvers winner) with 106 lb 4 oz from peg 11. Tony fished 17. 5 metres to the island using hard banded pellet over loose fed pellet - see his blog for further details. Well done matey definitely have a weight advantage over the majority of the anglers. Well done matey.

The Silvers was won by Kev Winstone with 23 lb 3 oz from peg 16. Kev caught short up and down in the water using caster over caster. His catch consisted mainly of small Pech and Roach. One thing anglers are noticing at the moment is that it's very difficult catching fish on the bottom. I wonder if it's anything to do with all the Siltex that has been put in this Pool?
